Classroom and Intervention Strategies for Teaching Phonemic Awareness

  • Beginning, Medial and Final Sounds-record picture/object sorting (include small set for options)
 
  • Beginning Sound Identification- Students listen to the word and identify what the first sound is (/b/ in bat). 

  • Middle Sound Identification-In a CVC structured word, students listen and identify the medial sound (/u/ in bug).

  • Final Sound Identification- Students listen to the word and identify the final sound (/n/ in van).                                      

  • Segmenting Phonemes-record tapping out, Elkonin boxes (magnetic wands and tiles), picture cards (who has the)
Segmenting 2 and 3 Sound Phonemes-Students can break down words into phonemes (man--> /m/ /a/ /n/).

  • Blending Phonemes- record 2 sound then three sound, sloth talk with motions, picture cards
2 and 3 Sound Blending-Students can push together individual sounds in a CVC word (/r/ /e/ /d/-->red).
