  • Recasting-When a student says a sentence incorrectly, the teacher says it back to the student correctly.

Example: Student: "Her eats a banana."  Teacher: "Yes, she eats a banana."

  • Expansion-The teacher repeats (or recasts) the student's incorrect sentence with proper grammar while adding words that expand the sentence.

Example: Student: "Hims eats an apple."  Teacher: "Yes, he eats an apple.  It is a red apple."

  • Parallel Talk-This is typically for students with very limited language skills.  The teacher uses child friendly language to narrate what the child is doing.  It is also used in describing pictures in stories. Included in this strategy is describing touching, feeling, smelling, hearing, seeing.

Example: Teacher: "You are swinging.  You are swinging so high.  Now you are getting lower."

  • Self Talk-This inolves talking out loud, describing, and commenting about what we are doing, seeing, hearing, or feeling.

Examples: Student: "I am drawing a picture."  "I am using purple for the dress and blue for the shoes."

  • Turn and Talk- This is a strategy where a teacher guides students in students having a peer-to-peer conversation on a topic being learned.
  • Vocabulary- Teacher defines, expands and uses the word in context while students also have the opportunity to use the word and make real world connections.

Example: Teacher: "This is a garden.  It is used for growing food.  What might grow in a garden? What do you think you would need to help the the garden grow?  Have you ever been in a garden?"

  • Conversational Talking Turns-This is simple back-and-forth conversation with an adult that is open ended (not just yes or no responses).

Example:

Turn 1 Teacher: “What are you doing this weekend?” Student:” I am going swimming.”

Turn 2 Teacher: “That sounds fun.  I hope the weather is warm when you go.”  Who will you be going with?”  Student: “My mom and dad.”

Turn 3: Teacher: “I bet your parents like to swim too.”  Where is the swimming pool?”  Student: “It is down by the park.”
