OWL/Heggerty

*As you teach Heggerty, be sure and remember that students are mirroring you with the motions so you will need to use your right hand for the start of a word and your left hand for the end of a word.

  • Syllable Blending-Students listen to parts of the word and blend them together (cow-girl-->cowgirl).

  • First Sound Identification-Students listen to the word and identify what the first sound is (/b/ /a/ /t/).

  • Onset Rime-Using only one-syllable words, students can identify the first sound and then the rest of the word (/r/ /an/).

  • Middle Sound Identification-In a CVC structured word, students listen and identify the medial sound (/b/ /u/ /g/.

  • Final Sound Identification-Students listen to the word and identify the final sound (/v/ /a/ /n/).

  • 2 and 3 Sound Blending-Students can push together individual sounds in a CVC word (/r/ /e/ /d/-->red)
